It’s spring! Time for baseball, soccer, tennis, and track. If your kids are involved in sports, it’s a great way for them to stay active. It keeps you active too, logging time in the car and on the field. Between practices, games, and athletic team fundraisers, your family is busy. But it’s important not to get so overbooked that your oral health gets neglected.
Here are dental care tips for keeping your family’s teeth in top shape, no matter how busy your schedules get! If you need to speak with us, call 507-316-6444.
Be Prepared for Dental Emergencies
No matter how much you try to prevent them, dental emergencies can happen. To minimize the stress – and possible damage to your smile – it’s important to get to our Rochester, MN dentist office right away. We’re open at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, including Fridays, and we’re in the office until 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you call us with an emergency, chances are good we can work you into our schedule.
It’s a good idea to save our number in your phone. That way, you never have to try to find our number in an area where internet access is sketchy. We’ll talk you through what you need to do – whether it’s heading to our office or even the emergency room.
Get Your Athlete a Mouthguard
According to an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association, at least 13 percent of dental injuries are sports related. That’s a lot of injuries! The American Dental Association recommends wearing a mouthguard for 29 sports, from acrobatics to wrestling. Any sport that involves running and/or a ball can result in a mouth injury.
Our dentists can fit your athletes for a custom mouthguard. A custom-made model will fit perfectly, so it will be far more comfortable than one purchased from a store. If they don’t fit well, mouthguards often get left on the sidelines. Our mouthguards are made of more durable materials too, so they’ll last longer.
Book a Dental Exam
No matter how full your calendar gets, it’s important to make space for two annual dental exams and cleanings. Even if you’re dedicated about brushing and flossing at home, you can’t get rid of all the plaque and tartar that cause both cavities and gum disease. We’ll clean your teeth to keep them healthy – and bonus, they’ll look and feel great.
Our dentists use high-tech tools like CariVu cavity detectors for your exams. That way they find any problems in early stages, when they are easiest to treat. Not having to return for more complex procedures is a tremendous time saver!
Don’t Ignore Dental Trouble
With or without spring sports on the schedule, if you’ve got kids you’re busy! So it can be tempting to ignore a tooth that hurts when you drink hot beverages or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. But dental problems will get worse if you ignore them – sometimes much worse.
Make time for restorative treatment if you need it. We can treat a small cavity with a filling. If the cavity gets bigger, you could end up needing a dental crown or even a root canal. Both of those procedures will require more of your valuable time, and more money, than a filling.
